What's In a Name?

ELIZABETH PICKERING My name, Elizabeth, is a Greek name from the Hebrew Elisheba. Its meaning is "the oath or fullness of God". In the Old Testament, Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist, therefore it is also a Biblical name. Throughout my life, my name has reminded me of my Catholic beliefs and how I should live my life. In this way, my name does define who I am, however, I have chosen to have my name define me. My last name, Pickering, is English. It is from the name of a town in North Yorkshire and was an Old English tribal name, Piceringas. Nothing Really Mattress(?): Kafka, Camus, and the Importance of Translation

Translation #1: Gregory Samsa woke from uneasy dreams one morning to find himself changed into a giant bug. Diction:  "Uneasy" has a less intense connotation so his sleep was just somewhat interrupted. "Giant bug" is not scary or frightening, it is just a big bug. "Changed" is a boring word that does not imply that anything magical or mysterious happened. Syntax:  The sentence flows easily and is simple Not difficult to read/understand Imagery/Details: I can imagine him waking up confused and anxious, possibly sweating, from his dreams.  "Giant bug" makes me think of a kid's movie or animation because it does not have any negative or dark words. Structure: Possibly a run-on sentence. No commas Translation #2: When Gregor Samsa awoke from troubled dreams one morning he found he had been transformed in his bed into an enormous bug. Diction: "Troubled" has the connotation that the dreams were upsetting and G...

Wing Young Huie's Work

http://www.wingyounghuie.com/p557435520/e7797101c This photograph was taken by Wing Young Huie and was published to his online gallery on December 5th of 2015. On first examination of this photo, we see two African-American males holding chalkboards with messages on them. The message of the boy on the left reads, "People judge other people before they get to know them". The message of the boy on the right is hard to read and understand; it is not a coherent thought. When looking deeper at the picture, I think the boy on the left is holding this sign because his friend or relative has a disability which causes people to look at him in a certain way. While the boy on the right cannot express his thoughts as clearly as the boy on the left, he should still be treated with respect and be seen as equal. Wing Young Huie and Margaret Atwood express "othering" in different ways. Huie uses imagery to convey the message that people perceive the boy on the ...
