This Pendant was made in Canterbury, England some time between 1774 and 1777. The title of this piece of art is, Reliquary Pendant with Queen Margaret of Sicily Blessed by Bishop Reginald of Bath. Its medium is gold and its size is 5 x 3.1 x 0.7cm. The pendant was made in a British culture and verifies the importance of relics and reliquaries in the political and social commerce of the Middle Ages. This piece of art was given to Queen Margaret of Sicily by Bishop Reginald of Bath. It is assumed that he gave it to her on the occasion of her son's marriage in December of 1177. The pendant originally held relics of the blood of Thomas Becket, a martyr. The artist of this pendant intended for it to be small yet powerful since it held the remains of a Saint. This pendant shows the importance of religion in this time period. Relics were used to preserve the memory of martyrs and Saints. This pendant no longer has the relics of Saint Thomas, however its meaning still remains.
