Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Quote from chapter 4 and quote from chapter 6.
When comparing the excerpt from chapter 4 and chapter 6, we see that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde represent two very different personalities. In chapter 4, we see Mr. Hyde. He is described as very impatient and unpredictable. He quickly bursts into a fit of rage with no explanation for it. Mr. Hyde was described as a madman by the maid who saw him kill Sir Danvers Carew. According to the maid, he did not look like he had any remorse for the victim and he was pleased with himself. This shows the reader that Mr. Hyde appears to be an evil, insane man.
Oppositely, chapter 6 shows us the humane side of this man, Dr. Jekyll. The reader can infer that Jekyll is weak while Hyde is powerful because of the strong influence that the one has on the other. At the start of this excerpt, Jekyll is no longer influenced by Hyde and he is starting a new, happy life. He interacts with friends again and has dinners with them. For two months he was back to his old, happy self. However, Hyde started creeping back in and taking control of him. He went to Dr. Lanyon as Hyde and transformed completely back into Jekyll. This caused great emotional and physical damage to Lanyon, resulting in his death.
Both of these excerpts share the appearance of Mr. Hyde and his effect on other characters. He caused a maid to faint because of his actions towards Carew and his lack of remorse. He is also responsible for the death of Lanyon because of his transformation. Clearly, he is inhumane and made from evil. Both excerpts discuss important actions in the novella. This shows how Stevenson developed the Hyde as a character. He associated him with intense actions and intense language so that the reader would get a negative vibe from Hyde. Lastly, in the excerpt from chapter 6, Stevenson started out with a light, positive tone because he was talking about Jekyll. In chapter 4, he uses harsh, intense words such as ape-like, storm, horror, madman, and others, to describe Hyde and his actions.

Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde
I am Dr. Jekyll
I am Mr. Hyde
I cannot control this dark side of me
It should not be long before I have total control over this weak side of me
This is not what I intended. It should be
equally strong. What have I done?
Why do these people try to see me all of the time? I do not know them. I do not wish to know them.
I have hurt so many people...
I wish this was over.
This won't be over until I can stay like this forever.
I cannot be Hyde. I cannot be Jekyll.
The purpose of this poem is to show how each character feels about their other half. The intended effect is to show how Hyde is stronger than Jekyll and is slowly overpowering him by expressing Jekyll's internal thoughts and remorse.
